PSHE & RSHE

Our world is rapidly changing. It is the overarching concepts and essential skills of PSHE that will enable pupils to manage the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities they will face now and in the future.

As a school, IJS recognise, and strongly believe, that personal development is the key stone in building and supporting all children throughout their education and beyond. Resilience, respect, self-belief, self-care, life skills and the ability to make good choices, learned during their time with us, are a crucial part of the children’s education here.

Along with our Religion and World views curriculum, PSHE and RSHE form an important part of the whole child’s learning and development. We follow the Jigsaw scheme of work, which means all year groups visit the same topic at the same time, throughout the year. The topics are clear in their progression, and include a wide variety of activities. The children enjoy a range of games, discussion, scenarios, role play and drawing or writing in their own journal The underlying focus is on every child being a unique and equally valued member of our school. The children learn personal and social skills, health and well being skills, emotional literacy and spiritual awareness, at an appropriate level for their age. The scheme is monitored regularly by the PSHE lead and the safeguarding governor.

Within the RSHE element of our PSHE curriculum, all children learn about the importance of forging healthy and respectful relationships, as well as how to look after their own physical health (through diet and excersise) and mental well-being (including meditation and getting enough sleep). They learn about online risks, the need for rationing time spent online, why social media is age restricted and where to seek help and support when necessary. The children also cover the aspects of basic first aid, community spirit, harmful and illegal substance abuse, body image and puberty. All PSHE lessons happen weekly and this progresses from Year 3 to Year 6. This means the children are familiar with the format of lessons in each year group. Their “Jigsaw Journals” follow them through the school.

We grow in PSHE because:

  • We learn to share and value others’ opinions
  • We become empowered through self-care and well-being skills learned
  • We become proficient in oracy and reasoning• We become more confident asking and answering ,sometimes difficult, questions
  • We improve in our social and emotional literacy
  • We learn to promote and maintain, attitudes of respect
  • We learn to foster healthy relationships• We find out how to stay safe online
  • We learn the effects of harmful substances on the body
  • We learn how our bodies change as we grow

Our PSHE & RSHE curriculum is transparent for parents and carers, giving them the right to withdraw their child if they feel it is appropriate.
